Chelsea Manning: Whistleblower and Activist
Early Life and Military Service
Chelsea Elizabeth Manning was born Bradley Edward Manning on December 17, 1987, in Oklahoma City. She is a former soldier and intelligence analyst in the United States Army.
Whistleblowing and WikiLeaks
In 2010, while working in Iraq, Manning provided hundreds of thousands of military and diplomatic records to WikiLeaks, an organization that publishes classified information. These documents exposed war crimes, human rights abuses, and diplomatic secrets, sparking international controversy.
Imprisonment and Release
Manning was arrested in 2010 and convicted of espionage and other charges in 2013. She was sentenced to 35 years in prison but was released in 2017 after President Barack Obama commuted her sentence.
Since her release, Manning has become an activist for LGBTQ+ rights, transparency, and free speech. She has spoken out against surveillance and government secrecy, continuing to advocate for the public's right to know.
