Cain, who was 74, died of complications from COVID-19, according to a statement from his website.
Herman Cain, the former Republican presidential candidate and former CEO of Godfather's Pizza, has died after being hospitalized with COVID-19 for several weeks. He was 74.
Cain's death was announced in a statement on his website. "Herman Cain – our boss, our friend, like family – has passed away," the statement reads. "He had been hospitalized with COVID-19, and despite the incredible efforts of the doctors and nurses who were caring for him, he could not overcome the virus."
Cain was a controversial figure in politics. He was known for his outspoken views on race and immigration, and he was criticized by some for his lack of experience in government. However, he was also a popular figure among some conservative voters, and he was seen as a potential challenger to Mitt Romney for the Republican nomination in 2012.
Cain eventually dropped out of the race after it was revealed that he had been accused of sexual harassment by several women. He denied the allegations, but they damaged his campaign and led to his eventual withdrawal.
After leaving the presidential race, Cain continued to be active in politics as a commentator and radio host. He was also a strong supporter of President Donald Trump.
Cain's death is a reminder of the deadly impact of COVID-19, which has now killed more than 170,000 people in the United States.
